My editing philosophy

My editing philosophy:

To me, editing is an investment and a collaborative process that requires clear communication and shared understanding of your goal.

That's why I offer a free Sample Edit to all new clients, up to 1,000 words. This gives us both a sneak peek into each other's working styles. If it turns out we’re not the right fit creatively, that’s okay. The goal is always to ensure your writing is in the best hands for what it needs.

As a novelist who works with my own editor, I also understand the importance of finding someone whose editing approach matches your vision.

Why choose me over AI?

Why choose me over AI?

Yes—tools like ChatGPT and Claude can fix up sentences, and more advanced apps can even provide large-scale feedback on your manuscript. But these systems are just that—systems.

As a human editor, I don’t just adjust words ... I help shape meaning. How? By collaborating with you, the human writer. By interpreting your work with my human emotions, not linguistic patterns. My feedback is based on context. On you, and your broader vision for the project.

In short, I don't edit based on the voice of eight billion people. Just yours.

“[Jaimie] demonstrated a sound grasp of technical editing by accurately correcting grammar and punctuation. She consistently aimed to meet the requirements of the briefs she was given.”

Nichola Meyer, principal of The Writers' College

“Jaimie-Rose has an excellent command of the English language and a keen eye for detail. Throughout her copy-editing and proofreading studies, she consistently demonstrated strong editing skills, accuracy, and professionalism. As her tutor, I have no hesitation in highly recommending her services as an editor, copy-editor, and proofreader.”

Di Smith, tutor for the Copy-editing and Proofreading Course at The Writers' College

Where I can’t help:

Just so we're aligned, while I've been trained in substantive editing, I don’t currently offer the following services:

  • Developmental, structural, or substantive editing

  • Rewrites and revisions of full manuscripts or sections

  • Ghostwriting

  • Academic editing beyond proofreading and reference checking

If your work needs this more in-depth attention, I'm happy to refer editors who can help, as well as share some excellent free resources.

Getting started

Getting started:

Before we begin, it helps to get some context about your project so I can understand what stage you’re at in the writing process. This includes a few specific details about your project like:

  • The full word count

  • Whether your project is complete or still in progress

  • Whether you’ve done any self-editing

  • A short description (genre, topic or purpose)

For some projects, I may also request a sample or full document for an editorial assessment. This helps me recommend the most suitable editing approach and provide an accurate quote. For new clients, a Sample Edit may also support this process where appropriate.

Pricing guide:

Every project is unique, so final quotes are based on the scope, length, and editorial requirements. As a general guide:
